 60 Years of Cantonese Opera

Singing and Learning Cantonese Operatic Songs

Introduction

Traditional Chinese opera, especially Cantonese opera, has undergone significant development in the past decades in Hong Kong.  Because no central repository existed for the relevant research materials accumulated so far, these scattered materials have not been easily accessible.  In order to better document the Chinese operatic culture and history of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council has commissioned the Cantonese Opera Research Programme of the Music Department, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to establish such a centre.  The Chinese Opera Information Centre commenced service on 1 March 2000.

The Centre 's Mission

The purpose of this establishment is to preserve Chinese opera research materials and to make them available to the public.  In order to enhance the flow of information, the Centre publishes a newsletter twice a year, which is available in all town halls, Chinese opera organizations, schools, libraries and our Centre.

The Centre houses various kinds of Chinese opera materials which focus on Cantonese opera materials.  It also holds substantial collections of materials related to various other regional opera genres such as Peking opera and Kun opera.  Within its collections, books, records, open-reel tapes, video tapes and CDs are housed in The Chinese Music Archive, Music Department, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  The Collections of Chinese musical instruments are separately housed.
